Will consumers pay Rs 50,000 for Xiaomi’s Mi 10 in India?

Xiaomi's Mi 10

On May 8, 2020, Xiaomi India MD Manu Kumar Jain launched the company’s Mi 10 5G flagship via a virtual event. The Chinese tech giant considers the Mi 10 the crème de la crème of Android smartphones with its stunning OLED display, 108MP camera, Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 865 chipset and fast charging. While the specs and features were largely known, it was the Mi 10’s Rs 49,999 price tag that garnered a lot of media attention. And that’s just the base price for the new Mi 10, which could cost you as much as Rs 54,999 fully-loaded. With the launch of Mi 10, Xiaomi officially re-enters India’s high-end smartphone market, where it will compete with Apple, Samsung and OnePlus.

For a brand that is famous for its budget Redmi series, Xiaomi’s gradual shift to the premium segment in its most successful international market was long expected. Xiaomi had been trying to get into India’s high-end smartphone market for quite some time, though it never got real success. Its last flagship phone was the Mi Mix 2, which made its debut in 2017.

“The switch to the premium segment is not a huge challenge for Xiaomi in India,” said Rajeev Nair, Senior analyst at Strategy Analytics. “The brand [Xiaomi] attracts a lot of online audiences and these audiences are slowly graduating to the next level.”

While it’s true Xiaomi wasn’t able to resonate with premium smartphone buyers with its past devices, a lot has changed since 2017. The market for high-end smartphones, especially above Rs 30,000, has grown significantly in a short time in India. The rise of OnePlus as well as the runaway success of iPhone XR and iPhone 11 shows that consumers are willing to pay for phones if they offer real value. Secondly, Xiaomi is now a household name in India, thanks to the popularity of the Redmi Note series, Mi TVs and Mi Air Purifiers. In fact, in the mobile phone space, Xiaomi is the leading smartphone maker with a 30 per cent market, according to Hong Kong-based market research firm Counterpoint.

Major PC games are Releasing on STEAM

Of all the major PC games coming out in February, three will not be sold on Steam. Instead, they're launching on other PC game stores.

These aren't small titles either. 4A Games' Metro Exodus, BioWare's Anthem, and Sumo Digital's Crackdown 3all won't be available on Steam. For PC, Metro is releasing on the Epic Games Store, while Anthem is launching on EA's Origin, and Crackdown 3 is releasing on Microsoft's Windows Store. It's a trend that will continue throughout 2019. Although February's Far Cry New Dawn is releasing on Steam, another big Ubisoft game--March's The Division 2--left Valve's store and is now scheduled to launch on Epic.

Kenshi : a real game

No one was really bothered by the official release, because nothing will change,” says Hunt, who speaks in a laid-back, laconic fashion that makes him seem affable and yet strangely distant. “People kept saying, ‘Ah, don’t release it too soon.’ I think they were worried that I was going to leave it buggy or incomplete.”

This bizarre situation has emerged because, despite being a decade in the making, Kenshi has been playable for half that time, and already has thousands of fans. Kenshi belongs to a sub-group of “Early Access” games on the biggest online PC games storefront, Steam. Through the platform, developers can release their games in an unfinished state, and use the revenue raised from purchases to fund the remainder of development. It can be likened to crowdfunding, although rather than investing on a promise, purchasers of the games can play along as development progresses.

Kenshi was one of 12 games selected to launch the initiative in March 2013. Of those, nine have been finished, two have ceased development, and one is stuck in limbo. Alongside Kenshi, the released games are Kerbal Space Program, ARMA 3, Prison Architect, Drunken Robot Pornography, Gnomoria , Gear Up, Starforge and Kinetic Void.

Steam Early Access facilitates projects that would be otherwise impossible to produce. But it raises questions about the relationship between developers and customers, and the responsibilities of Steam’s owner, Valve Corporation, to monitor what’s going on.

HP TangoX. New generation printer

Look & feel

The printer is an off-white plastic rectangle with a dark grey base. On the top is a relatively low-key embossed HP logo, and there’s a light-grey HP Tango X label in smallish letters on the front.
The printer measures around 15 inches wide by 8 inches deep by 3 inches high.

The book disguise

The combination of fairly minimalist looks and compact size means that the Tango X is already something that can be tucked away somewhere pretty discreetly, but since even small white plastic boxes aren’t particularly attractive, the printer comes with a linen cover – available in a choice of grey or indigo, which is a rather lovely subdued deep blue color. This looks almost like a dark grey.
The idea is that if, like me, you print so occasionally you’re happy to connect the printer to power when you actually need it, it can just sit on a bookshelf the rest of the time and no-one would even know it was there.
The bad news is that, at 15 inches in the longest dimension, it doesn’t sit upright on most bookshelves. But it does comfortably sit horizontally on our shelves, and yes, you’d never guess what it is. I wouldn’t say it looks like a book, but rather a stylish binder or similar. But it definitely ticks the ‘hide your printer away discreetly’ box.

Set up

Configuring wireless devices can sometimes be extremely fiddly and unreliable, and I sometimes find I need to resort to sacrificing a goat as an offering to the Wi-Fi gods. But getting the Tango X up-and-running couldn’t have been easier.
You need to install HP Smart software on your iPhone to configure the printer. Opening the app, the printer was immediately detected and it asked for my Wi-Fi details. I entered those, then it used animations to show how to install the supplied black and multi-color ink cartridges.
Both software and hardware set up were really easy.

Seized Railway Tickets

Railway tickets worth nearly Rs 1 crore were on January 27 seized by RPF sleuths here from the premises of a travel agency which was found to be involved in illegal sale of these and two persons arrested in this connection.
According to a release issued by the Railway Protection Force, the premises of Puja Travels, which ran from the basement of a hotel, were raided following a tip-off about illegal sale of tickets which was confirmed by the IRCTC.
Two employees Chandan Kumar and Pankaj Kumar Gupta were arrested from the spot. Five tatkal tickets worth Rs 5,692 and 93 reserved tickets of a future date having a total value Rs 4.30 lakh were also recovered from the spot.
In addition, 3,085 rail tickets of previous dates worth Rs 85.90 lakh, three mobile phones and Rs 52,000 in cash were recovered...

New factors of Samsung semiconductor

The 0.8μm-pixel ISOCELL Slim 3T2 brings high-resolution images with the smallest form factor in the industry at 1/3.4 inches

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today introduced its smallest high-resolution image sensor, the ISOCELL Slim 3T2. While being the industry’s most compact image sensor at 1/3.4 inches (approximately 5.1-millimeters diagonally), the 0.8μm-pixel ISOCELL Slim 3T2 delivers 20-megapixel (Mp) resolution for both front and back cameras in today’s sleekest mid-range smartphones.

“The ISOCELL Slim 3T2 is our smallest and most versatile 20Mp image sensor that helps mobile device manufacturers bring differentiated consumer value not only in camera performance but also in features including hardware design,” said Jinhyun Kwon, vice president of System LSI sensor marketing at Samsung Electronics. “As the demand for advanced imaging capabilities in mobile devices continue to grow, we will keep pushing the limits in image sensor technologies for richer user experiences.”

With 20-million active 0.8μm-sized pixels, the ISOCELL Slim 3T2 not just provides excellent clarity and detail. It also offers high color fidelity by adopting Samsung’s ISOCELL Plus technology that enables sensors to capture and absorb more light information for accurate color reproduction even with sub-micrometer-sized pixels.

In order to support smartphones with the latest display features such as the ‘hole-in display’ or ‘notch design,’ front-facing image sensors need to minimize their size while being able to capture high-quality images. The 1/3.4-inch 3T2 snuggly fits into a tiny module making more space for the display. In addition, Samsung’s Tetracell technology, which merges four pixels to work as one, lets the 3T2 take brighter and sharper pictures in low-light settings as the color filter array’s light sensitivity increases to that of a 1.6μm-pixel image sensor at 5Mp resolution.
When applied in rear-facing multi-camera settings for telephoto solutions, the 3T2 adopts an RGB color filter array instead of Tetracell technology. The small size of the image sensor also reduces the height of the tele-camera module by around seven percent when compared to Samsung’s 1/3-inch 20Mp image sensor, allowing more elegant smartphone designs. Compared to a 13Mp sensor with the same module height, the 20Mp 3T2 retains 60-percent higher effective resolution at 10x digital zoom that presents clearer and more accurate results.
The Samsung ISOCELL Slim 3T2 is expected to be in mass production in the first quarter of this year.

Xiaomi Foldable phone

Xiaomi may announce a new Mi device -- possibly the Mi 9 -- on February 19, as one of the few teasers reveal. There’s however no official word about the Mi 9 launch but going by a teaser posted by Xiaomi President Lin Bin and CEO Lei Jun on Weibo the flagship device is likely to go official on the slated date, Feb 19. Some rumours meanwhile suggested that Xiaomi could be debuting its foldable phone which was recently showcased by the                                                                                          company in a new                                                                                                                                    video on the same date.

Earlier rumours revealed that the Mi 9 will go official by the end of February, most likely at Mobile World Congress 2019. But now a new teaser suggests that the phone will go official way before the MWC. In fact, it will launch even before Samsung officially announces the Galaxy S10 and S10

PUBG's new. Tool

There's a huge number of PUBG streamers out there, so if you want to know if your kills have been broadcast on Twitch, you'll need something to help you out. Like PUBG Report: the online multiplayer game's new tool that gives you a way to search for Twitch streamers that either killed or were killed by that player. All you need to do is look for someone's username
to see a list of kills they were involved with that had been streamed on the video platform. And yes, you'll be able to click on the results to watch them -- the videos even begin right before the kill.
While it could be amusing to find out that you owned a famous streamer, the tool could be a double-edged sword. Players could use the website for stream sniping -- targeting specific streamers to, say, make a fool out of them -- especially since it shows broadcasts right as they're happening. To be fair, PUBG Report is far from the first search tool for streams, but it's the first one the game developers themselves have endorsed.
