WHAT PlayStation 5 IS :
The PlayStation 5 (PS5) is an upcoming home video game console developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Announced as the successor to the PlayStation 4 in 2019, its launch is scheduled for late 2020. The system will launch in two varieties, as a base PlayStation 5 system that will include an optical disc reader, as well as a Digital Edition without the drive.
The PS5 (or PlayStation 5) is the next-generation PlayStation console, with a release date confirmed for late 2020. At June 2020's The Future of Gaming event, we finally saw what the PS5 console looks like, as well as seeing trailers for many of its first games, like Horizon Forbidden West, Spider-Man: Miles Morales and a PS5 remake of Demon's Souls.
The PS5 design reveal was a shock, and it included the surprise unveiling of an all-digital PS5 without a disc drive. It's another sign that console manufacturers have their eye on a future without physical media. While Sony didn't reveal the PS5 price or release date, we now know a lot of what we can expect when the PlayStation 5 launches later this year.
Earlier this year, Sony revealed the DualSense PS5 controller, which includes a slew of impressive-sounding features like haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and a built-in mic. What really stands out about the DualSense controller, though, is its radically different look and space-age black-and-white color scheme, and it turns out the PS5 design has a similar look – this marks a significant departure from its predecessors.
Just as important as the DualSense Controller are the PS5 specs, discussed in detail at Sony's March reveal event. Lead system architect Mark Cerny provided us with a deep dive into the PS5's system architecture, revealing the technical inner workings of the PS5. We'll cover them in more detail down below, but the short of it is that the PS5 is rocking an AMD Zen 2-based CPU with 8 cores at 3.5GHz, 16GB of GDDR6 memory and a custom RDNA 2 AMD GPU that puts out 10.28 TFLOPs of processing power.
SOME FACTS ON PlayStation5 (PS5) [SOURCE : techradar]
- What is it? The Sony PS5 is the next-gen PlayStation console, replacing the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro.
- When will it release? "Holiday 2020" in the US, says Sony, so between October and December 2020.
- What can I play on it? Loads of games! They include a new Spider-Man entry, a Horizon Zero Dawn sequel, a Demon's Souls remake, Resident Evil 8 and much more to come.
- Will PS5 have VR? Oh yes. The next-gen console will be compatible with current PSVR hardware, and there are also rumors of PSVR 2.
- What will the PS5 cost? TBC. The PS4 and PS4 Pro were both $399 / £349 at launch, but we expect the PS5 will cost somewhat more. Leaks have suggested around the $499 mark.
- Can I play PS4 games on the PS5? The PS5 will definitely be backwards compatible with "almost all" PS4 games - earlier generations are still to be confirmed. It will launch with support for the majority of the top 100 PS4 games, according to Sony's Mark Cerny.

When it came to the reveal of the console itself, and with a few surprises in store too. Not one, but two PlayStation 5 consoles will launch – a standard edition with a 4K Blu-Ray disc drive, and a slimmer, disc-free Digital Edition.
The digital edition sees Sony moving with what’s increasingly becoming a physical-media-free hobby, banking on players to make use of digital downloads and streaming services rather than buying games or movies on disc-based hardware.
It’ll certainly make swapping games with friends a challenge, as well as trading them in, and gaming stores will likely be a little worried by its presence – especially if it proves significantly cheaper than the main version of the machine. But for those that enjoy building a physical library, the disc-based console remains an option at least.
PlayStation 5 RELEASE DATE :
Sony has officially confirmed that the PS5 will release globally , so likely some time between October and December 2020 - putting it in direct competition with the Xbox Series X, which is releasing in the same window.
However, this date would be in the right window, as we're predicting the PS5 will release in November, 2020. November is historically when we've seen PlayStation consoles launch and it would leave time before Christmas to get those orders in.

PlayStation HARDWARE :
The PlayStation 5 uses AMD's 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture with 8 CPU cores running at a variable frequency capped at 3.5 GHz.The GPU is a customized system-on-a-chip (SoC) based on AMD's RDNA 2, featuring 36 compute units running at a variable frequency, capped at 2.23 GHz, and capable of 10.28 TFLOPS. Both the CPU and GPU are monitored by a special boost system incorporating AMD's SmartShift technology that adjusts the frequency of these systems based on the current activities of both chips, to target ideal constant power drawn and a model SoC performance profile. For example, if the CPU is running at lower activity, the boost system may reduce its frequency and increase the frequency of the GPU to allow that GPU to run at higher performance without otherwise affecting power use or cooling. The GPU supports hardware acceleration of real-time ray traced rendering. It has a new audio technology called Tempest Engine, which allows not only for hundreds of sound sources within a game to be accounted for in producing audio output compared to 50 for the PlayStation 4, but also how that audio is presented based on the end user's device and preferences. The system has 16 GB of GDDR6 SDRAM with a bandwidth of 448 GB/s.
A custom SSD storage solution was designed for the PlayStation 5 to increase data input/output rates for fast loading times and larger bandwidth. This speed allows games to be more immersive and to support 8K resolution. The base system has a 825 GB SSD connected via a 12-channel interface to the main system, achieving a 5.5 GB/s transfer rate uncompressed, and between 8 to 9 GB/s using compression with the Oodle Kraken protocol from RAD Game Tools. This atypical drive size was found to be optimal for the 12-channel pathway for the system rather than more typical 500 GB or 1 TB units. Direct storage for games is expandable through an NVM Express (NVMe) M.2 port, while additional storage can be made available through USB-compatible drives. The system includes a 4K-compatible Ultra HD Blu-ray optical drive.Though game installation from a disc is mandatory as to take advantage of the SSD, the user has some fine-grain control of how much to install, such as only installing the multiplayer components of a game.
Sony is developing improved support for suspended gameplay state, for the PlayStation 5 to consume less energy than the PlayStation 4.
The console's form was revealed during the June 11, 2020 presentation. The launch unit is a white and black design matching the previously revealed DualSense controller, with a black internal block flanked by two white wings along its sides. The unit can operate in a vertical mode (with a stand to support it) or horizontally. Heat vents are located on the top of the unit in its vertical orientation. The front bezels include the Blu-Ray drive opening (for the base PlayStation 5 unit) and USB-A and USB-C ports. Sony's Jim Ryan stated the design was intended to represent a "quantum leap over the current generation" and that alongside the new games, was to be "transformational in the how they look, sound and feel. Ryan that the white and black color selection were for the launch and additional colors may be available later.

PlayStation 5 DUAL SENSE CONTROLLER :
The new DualSense wireless controller for the PlayStation 5 was revealed on April 7, 2020. The DualSense controller is based on the DualShock controllers but with modifications influenced by discussions with game designers and players.
The PS5 will come with a new gamepad, one that Sony is dubbing the DualSense PS5 controller, not the DualShock 5, like you'd expect. Also a departure is the black-and-white color scheme that is bold – and likely to be divisive. That's the confirmed design in the picture above, and it's closely mirrored by the PS5 console design, as you've already seen.
The two-tone PS5 controller color scheme extends to the four face buttons, which still
consist of Triangle, Circle, Square and Cross (or X), but they're devoid of color. There is a pop of color around the side of the central touchpad, as the PS4 Lightbar has moved from the top of the gamepad on the PS5.
The PS5 controller includes haptic feedback in the L2 and R2 shoulder buttons that are going to be adaptive. Sony explains that these adaptive triggers are important to let players feel the tension of their actions, like drawing a bow to shoot an arrow. This will let developers program the resistance of the triggers to simulate actions more accurately.
The DualSense controller has adaptive triggers that can change the resistance to the player as necessary, supporting an experience such as virtually drawing an arrow from a bow. The DualSense has strong haptic feedback through voice coil actuators, which together with an improved controller speaker is intended to give better in-game
feedback. While the DualSense maintains most of the same buttons as the DualShock 4, it renames the "Share" button to "Create" with additional means for players to share and create content with others. A new built-in microphone array was added so players can speak to others using only the controller. It has two-tone colouring, primarily white with black facing. The light bar has been moved to the sides of the touchpad. It has USB-C connectivity, a higher-rated battery and an audio jack.
PlayStation 5 : COMPATIBILITY :
Sony has stated that PlayStation 5 will be backward compatible with the "overwhelming majority" of PlayStation 4 games, with many running at a boosted processing speed "so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions". This is enabled in part by the similar hardware
architecture of the two systems and by adding "extra logic" to the RDNA 2 GPU to ensure compatibility with PlayStation 4's and 4 Pro's GPUs. Mark Cerny explained during a March 2020 presentation and later in an interview with Digital Foundry how CPU clock timing required particular attention; while the Zen 2 CPU has an instruction set to handle the PlayStation 4's Jaguar CPU, their timings can be very different, so Sony worked closely with AMD when developing the Zen 2 CPU to adjust the timings so they can more closely match that of the Jaguar. Cerny described the results as "excellent" but noted boosted frequencies can lead to occasional problems and so they are evaluating the performance of each individual game to spot any remaining issues that need attention by the software developers. To illustrate the engineering team's progress, Cerny provided a snapshot of the top 100 PlayStation 4
games based on play time and is expecting "almost all of them" to be compatible at launch. The new console is also expected to be compatible with PlayStation VR.
Eurogamer reported that Sony's certification program as of May 2020 required games for the PlayStation 4, submitted for certification after July 13, 2020, to be natively compatible with the PlayStation 5 (with the program providing additional instructions for such testing), while noting PlayStation was continuing work to ensure older PS4 games will run on PS5 through its backward compatibility program.
PlayStation 5 : PS5 MARKET PRICE AND IT'S RELEASE :
Sony plans to launch the PlayStation 5 by the end of 2020, as to be available for end-of-year holiday sales.
Two versions are expected for launch: The base PlayStation 5 will include a Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive, while the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will omit this drive. Both versions will ship with one DualSense controller.
Bloomberg reported in February 2020 from people with knowledge of Sony's manufacturing process that the current bill of materials selected for the unit were estimated to be about US$450 total, driven by the current higher costs of flash memory, which was in high demand by cell phone manufacturers for the rollout of 5G wireless connectivity. Bloomberg estimates the PlayStation price will be at least US$470, however increased revenue from online subscription services may allow Sony "greater flexibility" on final hardware pricing.
